Dr. Julie Schmidt Hasson spent decades as a teacher and principal in elementary schools before becoming a professor in educational leadership at Appalachian State University. She earned her doctorate from the University of South Florida in 2011.
Julie believes that teaching is the lever for creating a better world, but teaching is complicated, messy, and incredibly challenging. As a resilience trainer, she equips teachers with tools and strategies to navigate the challenges. As a trainer and consultant, Julie works with schools and districts to increase teacher resilience and engagement, the keys to increasing teacher retention.
Julie's talks and professional learning programs have helped educators around the world stay longer, grow stronger, and make a bigger impact. Her TEDx Talk, The Teachers We Remember, is often used as a reflection tool in school districts and colleges of education. In addition, Julie is the author of four books, including Safe, Seen, and Stretched in the Classroom: The Remarkable Ways Teachers Shape Students’ Lives and Pause, Ponder, and Persist in the Classroom: How Teachers Turn Challenges into Opportunities for Impact. Along with her best friend since middle school, she co-hosts the Lessons That Last podcast, reaching educators around the world each week. Julie currently lives in Boone, North Carolina, with her husband (also a professor), two dogs, and several geese.
